Gaels away from home recap

Women’s rugby

The women’s rugby team fell in a close bronze medal game on Saturday, Oct. 29 to the Western Mustangs 27-20 in London. This will be the third year in a row that the women’s rugby team settles for fourth place in the OUA, coming home without a medal.

While last week’s game was the first meeting of these two teams this season —  both teams recording a similar 3-2 record this season — the loss marks the third straight season that the Gaels have fallen to the Mustangs in the OUA bronze medal game. Last season, the Gaels lost 20-10 to the Mustangs.

In this year’s loss, Lauren Murray scored 10 of the Gaels 20 points to lead the Gaels.

Men’s soccer

After an exciting win in the dying moments of their first playoff game against Laurentian, the men’s soccer team’s hopes to continue in this year’s OUA playoffs have come to an end with a 1-0 loss in the quarterfinals against the Ryerson Rams. The game needed extra time to crown a victor but unlike their previous match, the Gaels were unable to pull out a win during overtime on Sunday, Oct. 30. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the Gaels have been eliminated during the OUA quarterfinals.

During the game, Queen’s was outshot 11-4, spending most of their time defending. While they tried to break down the Rams, they had no success. With the score tied at 0-0, the teams went into extra time, where Gaels goalkeeper Alex Jones saved a penalty kick to give his team a chance. Moments later, it seemed like the game was swinging in favour of the Gaels, with the Rams taking a red card and going down to 10 men. However, the good luck was not enough to keep the Gaels in it, as a 112 minute goal from Ryerson sealed the game.

With 13 players potentially graduating, the Gaels will be filled with fresh faces next year.
