It’s hard to find something that went right for the Gaels in the 2015 Homecoming football contest.

The Laurier Golden Hawks dominated Queen’s in nearly every facet of the game, who ultimately fell 49-26. A Doug Corby touchdown and a safety in garbage time made the score appear closer than it was.

Offensively, ball control proved an issue as Queen’s turned the ball over five times over the course of the game. The Golden Hawks capitalized off the Gaels’ struggles, returning a Nate Hobbs fumble for six points in the first quarter, before taking a Hobbs interception back for a touchdown late in the second quarter.

The lone bright spot for the Gaels in the first half came on the game’s opening drive, when running back Jonah Pataki punched in a six-yard touchdown rush. From that point onwards, Laurier controlled the tempo and reeled off 25 unanswered points to hold an 18-point lead at half time.

The third quarter proved similar. Laurier brought the score to 42-14, scoring their first two offensive touchdowns on the day. Dillon Wamsley added a field goal early in the fourth quarter, but by that point it was too little, too late for the Gaels. Laurier added a rushing touchdown in the final minute to finish off their blowout victory.

Hobbs completed 19 of 35 passes for 248 yards in the game, but also threw three interceptions. Corby was the only Gaels receiver to haul in more than three receptions, snagging 11 for 162 yards and one touchdown.

The one area that Queen’s can look back on with some satisfaction was their defence, as they held Laurier quarterback Eric Morelli to 123 yards on the game. All three touchdown drives for Laurier started within the Gaels 35-yard line, which was partly due to Queen’s failure to win the battle of field position.

Despite the loss, the Gaels held onto fourth place in the league and will host the Carleton Ravens next Saturday in the OUA quarterfinals.
