Borrowing from dad
With Father’s Day quickly approaching, the spotlight is on golf sets, Canadian Tire gift certificates and patterned ties. Take a break to shift your focus from buying for dad to borrowing from him instead and let him be your style inspiration this spring.
Menswear in women’s fashion isn’t a new concept – popular pieces ranges from oversized plaid shirts to boyfriend-style jeans. With women embracing shorter hair styles and looser fits, there’s never been a better time to check out what clothes dad has to offer.
I’ll admit that my dad’s closet isn’t the most fashion-forward; however, his classic black leather jacket, eccentric ties and old band tees are enviable. On the other hand, the holey socks and beat-up Reebok sneakers would not be missed, no matter how long he’s had them.
My favourite find was this vintage-looking Levi jean jacket I discovered at the back of the closet. The light-wash, button-up jacket appeared to have an acid washed look, but upon closer examination, the white splotches are actually the result of a chlorine spill. Although many sizes too large for me, I found the worn material to feel soft and comfortable.
3 ways to wear an oversized jean jacket
1. Keep the look comfy with leggings (patterned or leather ones gives a personal twist) and tall boots. The scarf and long top add length to the bulkiness of the jacket by creating a streamlined silhouette. I rolled up the sleeves for a warm-weather style, but they could easily be worn full-length as well.
2. Dress up the jacket with a form-fitting dress and delicate, pastel accessories. The laciness of the dress gives the look a girlish flair without going overboard. I paired this outfit with fuchsia lipstick and a pink belt to keep it feminine. For warmer weather, try draping the jacket over your shoulders, a style deemed “coat slinging” by Vogue.
3. For a casual going-out style, match the jacket with a print skirt, thick belt and concert/graphic tee. I tossed on a pair of combat boots to complement the belt but a pair of bright sneakers would also give this style a more relaxed feel. Red lips add a punch of colour to an otherwise dark look.
