Late goals cost Gaels twice
Late goals hurt the men’s soccer team in both games at Richardson Stadium this weekend. The Gaels tied the Ryerson Rams 2-2 on Saturday and lost to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 1-0 on Sunday.
After switching from left to right wing at halftime, Nathan Klemencic scored two goals in seven minutes against the Rams.
But the Gaels couldn’t sustain their lead. Rams striker Viktor Anastasov scored on a breakaway in the 65th minute. He scored another late goal after the Gaels’ rookie defender Marco d’Elia botched a clearance, sending the ball directly to Anastasov in scoring position.
The Gaels couldn’t manage a win, despite the recent benching of the Rams’ star Alex Braletic, after the midfielder was ruled academically ineligible.
Gencarelli said the team was too comfortable after Klemencic’s goal.
“When they scored that first one, we didn’t maintain our composure,” he said. “We were fortunate to come out of this game 2-2.”
On Sunday, the Gaels blemished their previously-undefeated record, with the 1-0 loss to the Varsity Blues.
The game was scoreless until d’Elia accidentally deflected a long throw into his own net to put the Varsity Blues ahead.
“[d’Elia] just had two unfortunate errors,” he said. “Unfortunately, those errors cost us those two games.”
At 3-2-1, the Gaels are tied for fourth in the OUA East. They will face the Carleton Ravens on Saturday and the Royal Military College Paladins on Sunday in Kingston.
