Spider-themed recipes to impress at any Halloween potluck

As university students, we’ve long traded trick-or-treating for costume parties and themed get-togethers. Now, the only thing scarier than ghosts and goblins is pulling together last-minute costumes and figuring out what to bring to Halloween potlucks.

If you’ve decided which pop culture icon to dress up as, but are still stuck on what tasty treat to share with friends, we’ve got you covered. These spooktacular spider-themed treats are sure to leave everyone feeling wicked good.

Spider web taco dip

Ingredients:

—1 brick of plain cream cheese, softened

—1/2 cup salsa

—1/2 cup mayonnaise

—1 tablespoon Tex-Mex seasoning mix

—1/2 cup sour cream

—1/3 cup grated cheese (optional)

—1/4 cup green onions, chopped (optional)

Directions:

1. In a blender or food processor, combine cream cheese, salsa, mayonnaise, and Tex-Mex seasoning. Blend until completely smooth.

2. Pour the mixture into a shallow pie pan, using a spatula to spread it out into an even layer.

3. Scoop the sour cream into a Ziploc bag, twist the top to avoid leakage, and snip off one of the corners. Use this makeshift piping bag to create four evenly-spaced concentric circles onto the dip. Drag a toothpick or knife through the sour cream circles toward the outer edge to achieve a spider web design.

4. If you’re more concerned with taste than spooky appearance, top the dip with grated cheese and green onions. Serve with tortilla chips.

Peanut butter chocolate spiders

Ingredients:

—1 cup smooth peanut butter

—1 cup icing sugar

—1 cup walnuts, chopped fine (optional)

—1/2 cup crushed graham crackers

—1 package of semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted

—1 small bag of salted pretzel sticks

Directions:

1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine peanut butter, icing sugar, walnuts, and graham crackers. Stir with a wooden spoon until a thick, uniform paste forms.

2. Shape the mixture into 1-inch balls. Let the peanut butter balls set in the fridge for twenty minutes.

3. While the balls are setting in the fridge, melt the chocolate chips (in a microwave-safe bowl) in the microwave. Nuke them at 30-second intervals until fully melted, stirring the chocolate between each interval.

4. Once the peanut butter balls are set, coat each in an even layer of melted chocolate and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Before the chocolate hardens, stick four pretzel sticks on either side of each ball to create spider legs.
