A tired student's guide to wake-up songs

There’s nothing worse than waking up for an 8:30 a.m. class. Okay, fine, getting up for an 8:30 a.m. on West Campus is worse. But no matter which way you slice it, no one likes to wake up early. You went to bed later than you wanted, you were in the middle of an unreal dream where all your classes are cancelled, and then boom. “Marimba”— the iPhone’s go-to alarm — rears its annoyingly-cheerful and obtrusive head into your dream world and shuts it down.

While I can’t change your lack of sleep or class times, I can make you slightly less irritated the moment you wake up with these song suggestions.

For the person who needs to ease into their mornings: ‘Goodness Gracious’ by Ellie Goulding.

Everything about this song has me convinced that it was made for alarms. It starts off with peaceful birds chirping and Goulding’s soft voice keeping you intrigued long enough to slowly stir and get started with your morning — in other words, start spilling things and wearing clothes inside out.

Similar suggestions: ‘Ultralight Beam’ by Kanye West, ‘Miracle’ by Kimbra.

For the person loves winter: ‘Winter Wonderland/Don’t Worry Be Happy’ by Pentatonix, featuring Tori Kelly.

The opening seconds of this song contain one of the most beautiful notes I’ve ever heard, courtesy of Tori Kelly. If — for some reason I’ll never understand — you enjoy winter and crave winter-y vibes from the moment you wake up, this is the song for you.

Similar suggestions: ‘True Love’ by Ariana Grande, ‘Someday at Christmas’ by Stevie Wonder.

For the person who can’t stand other voices in the morning: ‘Porcelain’ by Moby.

Do you want to feel like you’re slowly being lifted back to consciousness by tiny clouds? This string-filled oldie starts slowly, but has a piano hook that’s catchy enough to pull you into the new day. While there are technically lyrics, they don’t come in until almost a minute, and they would be better classified as long mumbles.

Similar suggestions: ‘Touch’ by BenZel, featuring Ryn Weaver, ‘Lostmyhead’ by The 1975.

For the person who could sleep through a zombie apocalypse: ‘Berzerk’ by Eminem.

I reserve use of this song for weeks when I am insanely sleep-deprived and almost need to be electrocuted to wake up. The song gets things going with a yelping electric guitar and Eminem yelling “WELL, THIS S**T’S ABOUT TO KICK OFF.” You’ll jump a mile but, no matter what happened the night before, you’ll wake up. If you suffer from sleeping through alarm after alarm, Eminem anger-rapping is your cure.

Similar suggestions: ‘Promises’ by Ryn Weaver, ‘Crazy Train’ by Ozzy Osbourne.

For the person with no storage left on their phone: ‘Constellation’.

This is one of the pre-loaded ringtones you can choose from and its my suggestion as the best sound to wake up to — really just anything other than that darn Marimba.
