They say that if you were there for a trend the first time around, you shouldn’t take part in it when it comes back in style. This puts us students in a curious position: what are we to do about the 90s revival that has come about?

Let’s just say that the above saying is reserved for preventing our parents from dipping into their closets brimming with 80s shoulder pads or mod mini skirts, and give nineties style a go.

Luckily the 90s offer a wide variety of style icons and trends to cultivate and make modern today. Immortalized on film back in the day, Johnny and Winona, Johnny and Kate, Brad and Gwyneth and ‘the supers’ are all style icons of minimalist sleek wear touched with a little grunge.

Every trend revival ought to be taken with a grain of salt – this year we’re cultivating certain looks from the 90s connoting grunge meets minimalism, but are definitely skipping over the less appealing hip hop looks of Britney and Justin or any boy band – yes, that means frosted tips are still not cool. Instead, give crop tops and slip dresses, dark lips and grunge styling, such as denim or flannel shirts tied around the waist, a try.

Hedi Slimane’s luxe grunge at Saint Laurent last March continues with this momentum from September at the New York shows; babydoll dresses, logomania, slip dresses, as well as chock-a-block of crop tops and other 90s habiliment, have taken fashion by storm. Jason Wu epitomized 90s clean minimalism with black, white and sea foam dresses while Alexander Wang’s streetstyle approach brought back logomania, bringing to mind Fendi baguettes and brand emblazonment over everything.

If you’re less comfortable with a belly baring crop top, try a strappy top that shows off strong shoulders instead.

Whether opting for Docs or Donna Karan, go for a dark berry stained lip and matte skin to compliment the 90s look. Make it modern by creating an ombre effect with the colour darker in the centre of the lips and fading outwards. For something more sheer and subtle, try Clinique’s Black Honey almost lipstick – in the tube it looks darker than actuality, but when applied it provides the perfect dark berry tint.

When dressing for rainy fall days, think back to Marc Jacobs infamous 1992 collection for Perry Ellis and Vogue’s ‘Grunge & Glory’ spread photographed by Steven Meisel; in this vein, reach for cozy sweaters, plaids and tartans and worn in boots.
