More than three months after police were notified that a racist and homophobic note was found in a Chown Hall common room, no updates have been provided on the status of their investigation.

On Oct. 10, the University released a statement on behalf of Principal Patrick Deane that announced the incident was being actively investigated after the University had notified the Kingston Police Department (KPD).

KPD was unable to provide a comment in time for publication.

At an open forum on Jan. 14, Deane responded to a question from The Journal about the status of the investigation, saying he understood it to be “active.”

“This is a long time for what ought to be a very simple investigation. Either there is no evidence that can be used to identify the perpetrator, or there is, in which case you can expect some conclusions to be reached,” he said. “It’s not up to me to second-guess the police.”

Deane pledged to inquire with the police about an update.

On Jan. 6, Mark Erdman, Queen’s manager of community relations and issues, confirmed to The Journal the investigation remained open.

“We have nothing new to report at this time,” Erdman wrote in a statement to The Journal.
