On Thursday night, Meredith Wilson-Smith was elected the next Editor in Chief of The Journal, Volume 147.

With 19 votes in her favour (57.6 per cent), Wilson-Smith was elected over current Sports Editor Matt Scace and News Editor Jasnit Pabla, who earned 14 votes (42.4 per cent).

With 35 of 47 potential electors voting, there was a 74.5 per cent voter turnout.

“In the words of my predecessor, I would ride or die for The Journal,” Wilson-Smith said following the election results. “Overall, I have never felt so over the moon. The Journal is the entire love of my life, and I cannot wait to expand it, grow it, and share that feeling with everyone else who’s interested.”

When asked what she’d say to her future staff, Wilson-Smith said, “I care about you.”

“I value you, and I cannot wait until we’re all working towards the same common purpose which is sharing the editorial autonomy, the passion, and the structure of The Journal.”

She added she’s never been so happy or excited.

“I cannot wait to share this with other people at Queen’s and to give them the same opportunities given to me,” Wilson-Smith said.

Current Editor in Chief Nick Pearce reflected on some of his first interactions with Wilson-Smith two years ago during an orientation photo scavenger hunt. “I was amazed at how quiet she was,” he said.

He and co-Editor in Chief Sebastian Bron hired her as Editorials Editor because they “always knew she was really smart and a very talented writer.”

“Ever since then she’s continuously presented herself as an incredible leader and person and a great example for other staff members,” Pearce said. “I’m incredibly happy for her.”

Pearce, who’s been on staff for volumes 143, 145, and 146, also reflected on how a new generation of leaders is taking over the paper. “Everyone I started with is gone,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier that Meredith’s going to be the person to take over for them,” he said.

Current Editor in Chief Sebastian Bron was also happy for Wilson-Smith.

“What’s unique about Meredith is she’s not afraid of change: she can adapt to any situation,” Bron said. “Nick and I have complete faith in her to take over our positions, but more importantly, take over the paper and bring it to new heights.”

When asked if he had full confidence Wilson-Smith would ride or die for The Journal, Bron answered, “Without a doubt.”
