QJBlogs is introducing a new series, “essentials”, in which we will be giving you a preview of the basics associated with a wide variety of activities, professions and hobbies. To begin our series, we are taking a look into a regular runner’s closet to find out what it takes to run through the elements and make for a pleasant, effective run.

The Essentials
The key to dressing for a winter run lies in layering and protecting against extremities. Your core and major muscles are best dressed with layers and insulating fabrics that will keep the heat you generate in and allow you to peel off a layer if you find yourself getting hot. It’s also important to stick to fabrics that are sweat-proof to prevent dampness that can cause a chill. Kingston is known for its bone-chilling winds, especially along the water. If this is part of your running route (as it is for many Queen’s students), invest in an insulated headband and windbreaker; your body will thank you. It’s important to keep your extremities—feet, hands and ears—insulated and protected from the cold as there won’t be as much blood flow. Winterized running shoes aren’t a necessity, however if you’re a regular runner it’s beneficial to have the added insulation and waterproof features.
