Twenty students gathered at Summerhill today to show their support for the Fine Arts program.

The students created a formation on the grass to spell out the letters “BFA.” A video was taken of the formation. Fine Arts Departmental Student Council chair Kaisa Moran said the stills from the video will be printed and presented to the Board of Trustees before their meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m.

Moran used a Facebook group to publicize the Summerhill gathering.

“I invited a lot of people online … I thought that was the easiest and most accessible way,” Moran, BFA ’12, said.

Around 30 per cent of the students who participated weren’t BFA students, Moran said.

“People came out today from bio-chemistry and math who support keeping the BFA alive and well,” she said.

Moran said the event today was part of a bigger message.

“The goal of today was to bring people together for one moment, for one cause – to speak about art in society and using society to speak about art,” she said.

Moran also started a petition at 11:30 a.m. yesterday to present at the Board of Trustees meeting tonight.

“The petition has signatures from worldwide, people from Germany and Australia have signed it. It’s not just people at Queen’s and not just BFA students,” she said.

As of 2:15 p.m. today, the petition had 583 signatures.

Moran added that AMS Assembly’s BFA committee will present a motion at the Board of Trustees meeting tonight.

“We’re essentially motioning that the Board of Trustees acknowledge the efforts that have been made by the student body on campus, and really, the arts community worldwide to support the program,” she said.
