Men’s hockey:

The men’s hockey team split the weekend with a 5-4 overtime loss to the York Lions on Friday and a 5-0 win against the Brock Badgers on Saturday.

On Friday, the Gaels travelled to Toronto to play in the Lions’ den. While the Gaels came out strong, starting the scoring in the first period, they faced tough competition throughout the match. The game was a back-and-forth affair, until Gaels forward Eric Ming widened the gap to 4-2 at the end of the second period with his second goal of the game. From there, the Lions roared back, scoring two goals in the third period, forcing overtime. In a shootout, the Lions slipped one past Kevin Bailie, giving the Lions a 5-4 victory.

On Saturday, the Gaels travelled to St. Catharine’s to play the Brock Badgers. Queen’s goals were scored by Warren Steele, Darcy Greenaway, Nevin Guy, Slater Doggett and Ryan Bloom. In the win, Queen’s was outshot 43-25, but Gaels’ goaltender Jacob Brennan had a fantastic night in St. Catharine’s, keeping the Badgers off the scoreboard.

Women’s hockey:

The women’s hockey team celebrated a tight 2-1 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Friday night in Oshawa.

UOIT started the game off strong, opening the scoring at the end of the first period and keeping the game locked in at 1-0 until the third. However, the Gaels had a new wind in the third period and managed to recapture the game when Kyla Crouse tied the game with a goal in the first minute of the period, assisted by Nadia Larocca. The game was sent to overtime, where Larocca got herself a goal 12 seconds in. In the win, Queen’s was outshot 32-23.

Women’s volleyball:

The women’s volleyball team faced the RMC Paladins in Kingston on Saturday, finishing with another 3-0 win.

The Gaels started the match off with strong back-to-back sets, (25-4) and (25-9) respectively and scored over 20 aces compared to the Paladins three. The game this weekend was a great repeat performance by the Gaels, as they dealt a similar score to the Paladins last Sunday. The third set (25-18) was closer as the Paladins came out with a renewed drive. However, the Gaels pulled ahead and closed the game with notable performances by Danielle Corrigan and Caroline Livingston. In the win, Queen’s out-hit RMC, with a strong .400 hitting percentage compared to .056 for RMC. Queen’s played a near perfect game, committing only two errors.

Men’s volleyball:

Queen’s came away this weekend with another win against the RMC Paladins, this time taking the game 3-1.

The team was led by Markus Trence and Zac Hutcheson, who had a combined 24 kills in the match, easily taking the first two sets for Queens (25-16) and (25-14). After losing the third set 25-23, Queen’s dominated in the fourth set, finishing the game with a 25-15 win. Queen’s was the more efficient of the two teams on the night, with their hitting percentage at .278 per cent compared to RMC’s .100.

Women’s basketball:

The women’s basketball team had a successful away weekend, coming away with a 79-72 win against the Brock Badgers on Friday and a tight 70-68 win against the McMaster Marauders on Saturday.

Andrea Priamo, Robyn Pearson and Marianne Alarie each enjoyed a successful Friday night as they added 24, 12 and 10 points respectively to the Gaels’ win. The first half of the game was a tight match for the Gaels. When the half-time whistle blew, the game was 37-36 in the Gaels’ favour. However, the Gaels managed to widen the gap in the third quarter with 22 points and maintained this momentum with 20 points in the fourth quarter to finish the game at 79-72.

On Saturday, the Gaels managed to beat the number one nationally-ranked McMaster Marauders in a 70-68 nail biter. The Gaels maintained a comfortable lead throughout the first three quarters of the game, going into the fourth with a 56-45 lead. However, the Marauders came back to life in the final quarter, adding 23 points over the Gaels’ mere 14, bringing the game within a single basket. The Gaels’ fought until the final buzzer, as the Marauders missed a last chance 3 pointer attempt to give Queen’s the victory.

Men’s basketball:

The men’s basketball team played two close matches this weekend falling short (63-77) against Brock and (75-87) to McMaster.

Queen’s was unable to find a way to win against the Badgers on Friday night. At half, Queen’s was down 41-30, and shot just 38 per cent from the field. On the night, the team was out-rebounded 53-29, allowing for more second chance opportunities and possession for Brock. Queen’s was outscored 20-8 on second chance points, and their bench was outscored 28-14.

On Saturday the Gaels travelled to McMaster to face off against the Marauders. Queen’s came out of the gate hot, shooting 50 per cent from the field and 57 per cent from three, putting them down only 21-20. Their fortunes changed in the second quarter, where the team only shot 26 per cent from the field, leaving the team to be outscored 23-11 in the quarter. A late push in the fourth quarter wouldn’t be enough, as Queen’s lost 87-75. In the loss, Jesse Graham had a standout game for Queen’s scoring 25 points in 25 minutes. With their fifth-straight loss of the season, Queen’s is 6-6, third in the OUA East.
