In their first win at Richardson Stadium since 2003, the McMaster Marauders beat the Queen’s football team 26-2 in the season opener Monday afternoon.

“It was one of those weird ones,” Gaels coach Pat Sheahan said. “I thought it kind of looked like we were in exhibition game mode.”

With nine seconds left in the first half, Marauders’ fourth-year quarterback, Kyle Quinlan, threw a 60-yard touchdown pass only 28 seconds after a Marauders field goal—a play Mauraders coach Stefan Ptaszek called the turning point of Monday’s game.

Quinlan threw for 349 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Quinlan’s last game at Richardson Stadium was in November 2009 in his first year as McMaster’s starting quarterback. In that game, he completed 12 passes on 36 attempts for 185 yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions.

“[McPhee] is throwing the ball way better than I was at that point,” Quinlan said.

In his first start as the Gaels’ quarterback, Billy McPhee completed 13 passes on 32 attempts with two interceptions. The Gaels didn’t score a touchdown.

Former Gaels quarterback Justin Chapdelaine, now a wide receiver, tallied 145 all-purpose yards on the day.
