Gaels weekend road round-up: week 10

The women’s hockey team (7-4-0-0) was the lone Queen’s team on the road this weekend, losing to the Nipissing Lakers (4-3-4-0) while defeating the Laurentian Voyageurs (3-5-1-2).

On Friday, against Nipissing, the Gaels fell to a late-game goal from the Lakers, losing 2-1. It was a disappointing repeat of Queen’s loss to Nipissing earlier in the season by the same score. The Lakers, who outshot Queen’s 28-20, heavily outplayed the Gaels.

Despite the loss, Queen’s retained its first place in the OUA, currently sitting one point ahead of Nipissing with 21 of their own. Meanwhile, Western and Ryerson are two points behind Queen’s as Guelph and Waterloo trail them by three.

On Saturday, the Gaels returned with a 2-1 win over Laurentian—their second win against the Voyageurs this season. Fourth-year Kaylie Dennis and fifth-year Addi Halladay scored both of Queen’s goals in the first and second periods. Queen’s was able to hold on to their lead in the third despite giving up a goal midway through the frame.

Goaltender Stephanie Pascal stood tall in her second win of the season, stopping 36 shots—16 of which came her way in the first period.

Next weekend, the Gaels will travel to Waterloo, taking on Laurier (2-6-0-1) on Friday and Waterloo (5-2-1-1) on Saturday.
