Men’s hockey builds on hot start

The Gaels (3-0-0) travelled to Oshawa to face the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) on Friday, winning 3-0 and defending their undefeated record to start the season.

Queen’s opened the game fast and without hesitation. Following a turnover by the Ridgebacks in the Gaels’ zone near the two-minute mark in the first frame, forward Mason Kohn scored the team’s first goal.

After a scoreless second period, Gaels defenceman Patrick Sanvido forced a puck past several UOIT players and into the back of the net from the point, just 15 seconds into the third frame.

Sealing the deal, Kohn closed the game off an empty-net goal near the end of the period to nail the 3-0 win.

The game’s starting goaltender, Justin Fazio, came away with his second win of the season and first shutout in Queen’s uniform.

The Gaels continue OUA action this weekend with home games against the Guelph Gryphons (0-0-1) and the Brock Badgers (2-0-0) on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Men’s rugby secures top position in OUA

The men’s rugby team maintained their undefeated status so far this season (7-0) with a 60-15 win over the Western Mustangs (2-5) on Saturday afternoon, clinching the top seed in the OUA.

Queen’s struck early for a 15-0 lead to open the game, and eventually headed into halftime with a 27-10 lead. The second half only brought five points for the Mustangs compared to the Gaels’ 33. First-year lock Liam Casey scored three tries for the team, while scrum-half Dylan Young put up 15 points off one try and five conversions off kicks.

Up next, the Gaels will host the McMaster Marauders (4-3) at Nixon Field for their final regular season game. With playoffs fast approaching, the Gaels’ are looking to win their second OUA championship in as many years.

Men’s soccer earns crucial six points against Laurentian and Nipissing

The men’s soccer team had a pair of much-needed wins this weekend, defeating both Laurentian and Nipissing 1-0.

Against Laurentian on Saturday, the Gaels kept their cool in a physical game that resulted in three yellow cards and one red card going against Laurentian. The game would remain scoreless until defenceman Junior Kwame Addai scored in the 85th minute.

On Sunday, the Gaels came out on top of another high-intensity affair against Nipissing. Early in the second half, defender Kyle Owens capitalized on a penalty shot—scoring what would be the only goal of the match and giving the Gaels another big win.

Coming out of the weekend with six points, the Gaels sped ahead of Nipissing and Laurentian in the OUA standings.

Queen’s was tied with Nipissing before the weekend, but six points now separate the two teams. The Gaels are currently fourth in the OUA East.

The Gaels will close out their season at home against UOIT on Wednesday, and will play their final regular season game against the 12-1-1 Carleton Ravens on Saturday in Ottawa.

Women’s soccer misses out following ties with Laurentian and Nipissing

It was a weekend of missed opportunities for the women’s soccer team.

With a chance of securing second place in the OUA East, the Gaels would tie Laurentian 1-1 on Saturday and Nipissing 0-0 on Sunday.

Against Laurentian, the Gaels were on the brink of defeat until the 66th minute when Jenny Wolever tapped in her 14th goal of the season. Her tally would be the last of the game before the Gaels moved on to play Nipissing, who trailed them by just two points in the OUA East heading into the match.

On Sunday, Queen’s offence was shut down by Nipissing in their 0-0 draw. The Gaels outshot Nipissing 10 to five, but were unable to convert. With the draw, Queen’s sits three points ahead of Nipissing and four in front of UOIT for second in the OUA East.

Queen’s will close out their season next weekend in Ottawa against Carleton and UOttawa—with the latter looking like a big test for the tricolor. UOttawa currently holds an OUA-best 12-1-1 record, and beat the Gaels 2-0 earlier this season.
