Football’s comeback falls short in overtime in Ottawa

Despite a second half rally to force overtime, the Gaels were handed a tough loss this past Saturday by the nationally-ranked eighth Carleton Ravens.

Queen’s outscored Carleton 22-4 in the third and fourth quarters, and had a chance to complete the upset in the dying seconds of the game. Tied at 36-36, Gaels kicker Nick Liberatore missed from 42 yards—eventually giving way for Carleton to take momentum and win 42-39 in overtime.

The Gaels barely beat Carleton in passing yards 351 to 303, but the Ravens made 34 first downs to the Gaels’ 26.

After his second touchdown pass in the second quarter, quarterback Nate Hobbs moved himself a spot up in the Queen’s record books. With 51 career passing touchdowns after Saturday’s game, he’s currently fourth in the program’s history for passing scores.

Fifth-year Matteo Del Brocco was at the receiving end for three of his quarterback’s four touchdown passes on the day, giving him a total of five and ranking him second in the OUA for receiving touchdowns. Del Brocco has now tied his career high in touchdowns only four games into the season.

Next weekend, the Gaels will travel westward to face the Guelph Gryphons (2-2) where they’ll fight to keep their spot in the running for playoffs. Queen’s currently maintains a 2-2 record.

Men’s rugby stays undefeated with monstrous 97-8 win against University of Toronto

In Toronto, the men’s rugby team dominated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues to maintain their perfect season record.

The opening of the game saw the Gaels put up 26 unanswered points before letting the Blues score two tries to close the first half. In the second, Queen’s put up ten tries to lead them to an overwhelming 89-point win.

This was the second match this season in which the Gaels kept their opponent under 10 points.

Among the standout performances in the game, Nick De Lallo collected five tries for 25 points, doubling his number of tries so far this season. He now has 10 tries in his first three careers OUA matches including his five this weekend.

Currently, the Gaels are ranked first in the OUA with a record of 3-0, which is only matched by the Guelph Gryphons. The Gaels take on the Gryphons Sept. 22 in a rematch of last year’s OUA final.

The Gaels are set to host Brock this coming weekend.

Women’s rugby comes out on top at McMaster

In Hamilton, the women’s rugby team brought their season record to 2-1 with a 34-14 victory against the McMaster Marauders. This win ranks the Gaels third in the OUA.

At halftime, the game sat at 8-0 for the Gaels. They pulled further ahead with a lead of 22-0 before letting up 14 points to the Marauders.

Both Sophie de Goede and Rachel Hickson scored two tries for the Gaels. Hickson currently leads the team with seven tries for 35 points on the season, and de Goede is right behind her with 32 points.

Queen’s will play their last regular season game against the York Lions in two weeks at home, as they have a week off between.
