Men’s soccer scores combined seven goals in two games

The Gaels seized opportunity this weekend in their matchups against the winless University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks and Trent Excalibur.

On Friday, Queen’s edged out UOIT in Oshawa by a score of 1-0. In a match with limited offensive power, the Gaels were able to get ahead 48 minutes into the game after third-year midfielder Michael Chang jumped on a rebound for his first goal of the season. Goaltender Alex Jones would make seven saves in the shutout performance.

After a day of rest, the Gaels travelled to Peterborough on Sunday afternoon for their match against Trent. Finding themselves down 2-0 after 25 minutes, Queen’s was able to pour in six unanswered goals—two of which came from Chang. Forward Antoine Noel contributed three assists to Queen’s six tallies.

Sitting with a 3-1-0 record, Queen’s is currently tied with Nipissing and the University of Toronto (U of T) for third place in the OUA East with nine points. They trail Carleton by seven points and Ryerson by four in the standings.

The Gaels are preparing for three games in Kingston this week. On Wednesday afternoon, they’ll make a short trip to the Royal Military College (RMC) to face the 2-1-1 Paladins.

On the weekend, they’ll get their first big test against Ryerson, and will then look to set themselves apart from U of T in a clash with the Varsity Blues on Sunday.

Women’s soccer split weekend games with UOIT and Trent

Women’s soccer had mixed results this weekend against UOIT and Trent, coming away with a 3-1-0 record after a win and a loss.

In Friday’s game against UOIT, the Gaels fell down early, giving up a goal just six minutes into the first half. The goal would end up being the game-winner, as OUIT sealed their victory in the 71st minute, going up 2-0.

Sunday was another story for the Gaels. Coming off a loss, the team sealed seven goals in a 7-2 win over Trent. Second-year forward Alexandra Doane made her mark early on, accounting for the Gaels’ first three goals—all of which came in the first 45 minutes.

Jenny Wolever continued her hot streak after last weekend’s hat trick, adding a goal and an assist to Queen’s winning effort.

The Gaels are currently tied for fourth in the OUA East with UOIT, though the Ridgebacks have played two more games than Queen’s. Currently, the team is just a point back from the second-place Nipissing Lakers and University of Toronto, with the former having played two more than the Gaels and the latter one more.

Queen’s is now set for a home-and-home against the RMC Paladins, driving over the causeway to RMC’s campus for Saturday’s game, then hosting on Sunday at Richardson Stadium.
