Homecoming: Stylish Spirit

Signs of Homecoming are everywhere you turn.

Parties are being prepped, tickets are selling out and there isn’t a mattress in your house that hasn’t been claimed by a friend from out of town. With all these arrangements in place, it’s time to start planning the weekend’s most important element: your outfit.

Showing your tricolour spirit is an absolute must – but, there’s no reason to limit yourself to Queen’s sweats and free t-shirts.

Instead, take the time to put an outfit together that reflects your personal style as well as your love for Queen’s.

Borrowed from the boys

If you tend to rock a more laid-back style, consider a Homecoming look inspired by some of your guy friends. In fact, if inspiration is really lacking in your wardrobe, some borrowing may be in order!

Oversized plaid shirts are a great statement piece, especially if you can find one in a Queen’s colour wave. How convenient that grunge is making a comeback this season!

Aim for garments that are a little oversized, but make sure your proportions aren’t lost by keeping your sleeves rolled and leaving the shirt open. Sleek skinny jeans and a tank are all that’s needed underneath to make it clear that while these clothes may be borrowed, you aren’t actually one of the guys.

Vintage inspired

Homecoming is a chance to welcome back old friends and it’s also the perfect time to do the same for any vintage elements you might have had your eye on.

High-waisted bottoms and textures like velvet or loose cotton knits are as popular today as they were in the 70s, while youthful additions like cut offs, keep the look fresh and make the most of the unseasonably warm weather we’ve been having.

Red lips bring a splash of tricolour to the look. Tie the look together with an up do and rockabilly-esque bandana to really send the message home!

Preppy/ Everyday look

Football might not be everyone’s forte, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get in on the school-spirited fun! Bring some tricolour to your everyday look by mixing pieces you already own to create a spirited, but practical, ensemble.

One way to achieve this is by experimenting with different shades of red, blue and yellow than you’d find with traditional tricolour gear. Instead, opt for more muted colours like burgundy, navy and gold for a subtler look.

Skirts and dresses add instant polish to any look and provide some 80s era preppy influence, but never underestimate the power of accessories! Scarves, headbands and bags can have a powerful impact on your look and when it comes to tricolour, a pop of yellow or red is all it takes. To really play up the collegiate vibe, throw on a class ring from your parent’s year and vicariously feel the nostalgia.

Using pieces you already own, or are sure to wear again, is the first step to an outfit you’ll love and a smart economic decision. Wear what you love and bring your own unique perspective on Queen’s pride to Homecoming.
