Men's rugby loses provincial final

The men’s rugby team fell 21-15 to the Western Mustangs in the OUA final in London on Sunday.

When the two teams played for a gold medal in 2009, the Gaels came out on top. But this time they couldn’t make up for a slow start at TD Waterhouse Stadium in London.

The Mustangs scored a try in the first two minutes of the game and led 13-3 at halftime. The Gaels turned it around in the second half, with back Scott Kyle scoring early to reduce Western’s lead to five points. But the Mustangs replied to extend their lead to ten points.

Gaels hooker Matt Wolfe scored with two minutes left to make it 18-15, but Queen’s couldn’t get any closer.

The Mustangs’ win clinches a perfect season, going 8-0 in the regular season and 2-0 in the playoffs. Queen’s finished the regular season at 7-1 after losing 13-7 to the Mustangs on Oct. 2 in London.

Sunday’s win secured Western’s ninth-ever OUA title. Queen’s has won 18.
