We’re bringing you some of our favourite movie picks and recommendations based on what we’ve been watching over the past few weeks; whether you’re into white collar crime, romcoms or court-room thrillers, we’ve got 10 recommendations (both old and new) to see you through the next few weeks (Reading Week midday movie marathon, anyone?)

1. Margin Call– A Wall Street drama centred around the infamous 24 hours before the 2008 financial crisis; the slick characters (Jeremy Irons, Paul Bettany and Kevin Spacey to name a few) are entertaining, while the movie does a great job at incorporating some black humour into the tense, cut-throat plot.

2. Layer Cake– For those of you who love British gangster movies like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, or if you have a thing for Daniel Craig.

3. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps– Michael Douglas is as badass as ever, and Shia LaBeouf does a great job at portraying a smart kid trying to keep his conscience clear while surrounded by a lot of money-hungry suits.

4. An Education– If you love Europe or dream of living in Paris, you’re sure to enjoy the glamorous lifestyle portrayed in the film, which features the innocent school-girl Carey Mulligan and her much older suitor.

5. He’s Just Not That Into You– If you’ve already seen it (and we’re confident you already have), re-watch it for the 10th time and we promise it’ll be just as good as the first time around.

6. The Girl Next Door– Though we could go on about the good-looking Elisha Cuthbert, the young Emile Hirsch is endearing and innocent opposite her fiery character; perfect if you’re looking for a classic high school movie setting and loved 10 Things I Hate About You.

7. Primal Fear– One of my favourite Ed Norton movies with a gripping plot and a chills-inducing twist; one of the best court room whodunit films out there.

8. Julie & Julia– Great for all you foodies or Meryl Streep fans. A light flick for a girl’s night in or Sunday morning moviefest.

9. A Single Man– A moving performance by Colin Firth and Nicholas Hoult (he was just as captivating in About A Boy). Tom Ford’s directorial debut is artistically shot and filled with great fashion.

10. The Last King of Scotland– Forest Whitaker gives one of the best performances we’ve ever seen as the brutal Ugandan dictator Idi Amin who reined during the 1970s. His character is bone-chillingly evil; get ready to be left in a pretty intense headspace.
