As Queen’s students are starting to pull out their Canada Goose jackets and Hunter rainboots, New York City is fast-forwarding to spring. New York Fashion Week just finished and designers delivered their all this year. From loud and edgy to soft and simple, New York Fashion Week had a lot to offer. Here are the highlights.

Tommy Hilfiger

Every year fans can expect to see a new incredibly well thought out and designed theme for Tommy Hilfiger’s New York Fashion Week show. From an alpine resort to a street covered in ivy to a beach boardwalk, Hilfiger always manages to amaze audiences.

This year he managed to outdo himself with a Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club theme mixed with a music festival vibe.The look for this fashion show was typical vintage bomber jackets, ankle boots and patterned shorts but with a modern twist that still held the sentiment of the ’60s.

Try the bold red and black combination for a night out, whether you’re hitting up Stages or grabbing drinks at the Brooklyn. Black combat boots are the perfect transition shoe as the weather starts to cool and can easily be dressed down or up, depending on the occasion. Although it may be a little cool for shorts, if paired with tights and a warm sweater, the look is quite versatile.

Michael Kors

Michael Kors took a different route when it came to his fashion show. While most fashion shows during New York Fashion Week are very busy and over-the-top, Michael Kors stuck with a very neutral theme, both in his clothes and his set. Kors showcased classic pieces like white blouses and pea coats but added a refreshing twist of light neutrals and simple flowers including daisies, marigolds and daffodils to the mix.

This preppy style works well for a weekend with the parents or a celebratory dinner out with friends. A bright yellow skirt could also be incorporated into a Homecoming outfit, especially if paired with a tricolour sweater and navy tights. Add a bright red lip and you’re all set to cheer on the Gaels.

Philip Lim

Phillip Lim took the same route as Michael Kors while sticking with neutral colours but mixing them with different cuts to make a truly original look. He played with oranges and yellows, both with the clothing and the shoes. As a result, the plain background made the minimalist colours pop even more. Even though this line is intended for spring, remember that florals can brighten up any dreary fall day.

Neutrals can act as a base for brighter accessories, so feel free to toss on a tam or Tricolour Outlet snapback. A simple white dress works well for paint parties where you can expect to be covered in head-to-toe paint. Don’t be afraid to wear white into the fall — white jeans, blazers and knit tops can dress up any outfit.

Topshop Unique

Unlike many other high fashion shows, Topshop Unique’s spring collection contains attainable looks for everyday wear. The line features classically cut shirts, jackets and dresses but had a certain flare that made them unique. Neutrals with black and white stripes, light yellow dresses and blue tops were abundant. Yet every outfit featured a surprising pop that made the outfit stand out, such as a bright yellow bangle.

For a fun, unique look, try mixing bright colours such as navy and yellow. You can take a new twist on tricolour by wearing neon blues, yellows and reds. A classic navy cardigan embellished with the Queen’s logo can also be paired with brighter bottoms for an unexpected combination.

BCBG Max Azria

BCBG Max Azria’s show stood out because of the simplicity of the clothes. The only colours were a bit of blue and orange, but for the most part the dresses and skirts were white. The runway was a light pink colour, which complemented the airy look very well. The clothes featured light pleats and some subtle beading and patterns. The theme was to embrace basics — sometimes the simpler the pattern, the better. Sticking with basics is a great idea, not only for the runway but for everyday life.

Gauzy, lightweight dresses aren’t just for the summer, though. A classic jean jacket or black moto jacket transitions summer pieces and can be paired with ankle boots or a scarf. Simple white dresses are a staple for Thanksgiving weekend, whether you’re enjoying a family dinner or catching up with high school friends over coffee.
