Sports in brief

Women’s hockey winless

The women’s hockey team returned from last weekend’s road trip empty-handed, losing to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks and the Toronto Varsity Blues. The losses drop the Gaels to 7-3-1.

The undefeated Golden Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in Waterloo last Friday. The Gaels equalized in the second period with goals from forwards Morgan McHaffie and Shawna Griffin, but the Golden Hawks responded with three unanswered goals to win 5-2. McHaffie leads the OUA in scoring with 10 goals and 11 assists.

Against the Varsity Blues on Saturday, McHaffie opened the scoring and her sister Brittany McHaffie added a second, but the Gaels trailed 3-2 late in the game until forward Taryn Pilon scored to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless extra frame, the Gaels fell 1-0 in a shootout.

Men’s volleyball splits games

The men’s volleyball team rebounded from a dismal three-set loss to the Guelph Gryphons on Friday to sweep the Waterloo Warriors and salvage their road trip on Saturday.

In Guelph, the Gaels fell 25-13, 25-21 and 25-14 to a surging Gryphons team that currently sits second in the OUA with a 5-1 record. Outside hitters Andrew Whitaker and Winston Rosser led the Gryphons with a combined 28 kills.

Gaels outside hitter Joren Zeeman recorded 18 kills the next day in Waterloo to give his team its first win in four games. But the straight-set win was close, with the Gaels only winning 25-21, 25-21 and 25-22.

With the split, the Gaels move to 2-3 and sixth in the OUA. They host the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (1-5) on Friday and the McMaster Marauders (4-2) on Saturday.
