Men’s basketball denied in Ottawa

The men’s basketball team travelled to the capital this past weekend with hopes of getting closer to snagging a playoff spot. Action kicked off Friday night against the Ottawa Gee-Gees, but Queen’s couldn’t reproduce any of the magic from their upset win over the Toronto Varsity Blues a week earlier.

The Gee-Gees cruised to a dominant 71-41 victory. The next day against the Carleton Ravens was more of the same theme. The nationally ranked Ravens took apart the Gaels to win 81-41. The Gaels now sit six points behind the sixth placed Laurentian Voyageurs and the final playoff position.

Highlighting the weekend was Erin Roberts on the women’s team, who only lost against Micaala Seth of Waterloo, last year’s University and College Squash champion.

Plenty of improvement for track at McGill Invitational

The Gaels had plenty to be happy about this past weekend in Montreal as nearly all the athletes posted personal best times in their events. Michael Nishiyama stood out as he beat personal bests in the 4×800 metre relay, the 600 metre and the 4×400 metre relay. Grant Henneberg finished seventh in the long jump.

On the women’s side Stephanie Hulse finished as the third best university athlete in the 3,000 metre, bringing home the lone medal of the meet for the Gaels.

Great Britain (6-1), Korea (6-1), the Czech Republic (5-2) and Switzerland (5-2) currently sit ahead of them as two games remain in round robin action.
