Toronto-based band Jane’s Party found their sound within diversity.

These proud Torontonians add a bit of weight to their alternative pop/rock sound, taking inspiration from the classics, while venturing into new territory.

The four members, Jeff Giles, Tom Ionescu, Devon Richardson and Zach Sutton, met at York University where they were all music students.

Initially playing in separate bands, which ranged in style from hip hop to jazz to funk, guitarist Ionescu credits the band’s sound development to each member’s eclectic musical origins.

The band has been known to cover some of their favourite classics, like The Beatles, The Band and The Rolling Stones.

The band’s focus will always be on writing original music, Ionescu said. However, learning and reinterpreting historically popular songs is a collective interest.

“There’s so much to be said about learning the tradition and picking up a lot of different things out of the music that’s stood the test of time,” he said.

While these famous influences have undoubtedly inspired the band’s sound, Jane’s Party has also been affected by their musical peers. Toronto’s music scene exposed them to bands that did not compromise originality for a nod towards tradition.

“The thing that really motivated us … was seeing some of the bands around town that were able to use those influences and inspire their own music with them,” Ionescu said.

Having already released two albums and an EP after being signed to one of Toronto’s biggest independent record labels, Cameron House Records, it’s safe to say that Jane’s Party has been successful in developing their unique sound.

While the show’s set will feature their newest album Hot Noise, released in May, Ionescu hinted they’ll be playing some new material that they’ve been working on over the past few months.

“There’s a couple songs that have been kicking around that we haven’t put together yet,” he said. “Stuff that we haven’t even played before, that no one’s ever heard.”

This isn’t the first time the Party has come to Kingston.

The Mansion and Clark Hall Pub are familiar venues for the band. They said there’s a strong sense of community that brings them back time after time.

“Every single time we come we see people we’ve met the time before, or two times before that,” he said. “There’s like a little family, a fan-base, there, so it’s really great to come back and see those people again.”

Jane’s Party will be playing at the Mansion this Thursday.
