The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) awarded $2.1 million in research funding to 22 Queen’s researchers through the SSHRC Insight program.

Insight Grant funding aims to build knowledge and understanding of people, societies and the world. Their intent is to benefit new Canadian citizens and migrants who encounter cultural, political, social, and economical changes.

There are two categories of funding received by members of the University. The first, Insight Grants, aim to support established and emerging researchers in long-term research initiatives.

The second category is the Insight Development Grants, which support research in its initial stages.

Insight Grant recipients include Alice Hovorka (Geography and Planning) who’s studying animal governance strategies to better understand animal-human relations.

As well, Fiona Kay in Sociology, who studies employment transitions of people late in their careers, and Elaine Power of Kinesiology and Health Studies, who studies how municipalities in Canada can improve the right to food for their residents.

With Insight Development Grants, Brant Abbott from Economics will study the factors behind the uncertainty in terms of their future lifetime income, and Yu Hou in the School of Business will study audit office switches. 

According to the SSHRC site and Kirsty Duncan, minister of science, the grants can lead to important discoveries that will help Canadians, including those “who now call Canada home”.
