Men’s basketball: Singh breaks points record while Gaels lose nine in a row

Although the Gaels had two opportunities to make up ground in the OUA standings this weekend, the team failed to capitalize. A 70-59 loss on Friday night against number five ranked Ryerson was followed by a 85-77 loss to Toronto, extending the Gaels’ losing-streak to nine games.

Against Ryerson, Queen’s had its lowest scoring output of the season, only managing 59 points against the OUA East’s top team. While the Gaels were successful in keeping Ryerson 19 points under their season average of 89.2 — second best in the OUA — Queen’s couldn’t make up the difference. Queen’s only got to the free throw line nine times and managed to hit just five of their 24 attempts from three.

While they had a better night offensively against Toronto, the Gaels’ poor second and third quarters were the difference. In the two frames, Queen’s was outscored 48-33, and committed seven more turnovers than Toronto.

In the losses, Sukhpreet Singh scored a combined 34 points, pushing his all-time career points with the Gaels to 1,345. With that, Singh moves past Mitch Leger in the school’s history books for most all-time points.

Women’s basketball: Streak continues to roll with 16 straight wins

With a game-winning basket in the dying moments of the game against Ryerson and a blowout victory against Toronto, the women’s basketball team continues to dominate the OUA. With their two wins, Queen’s now sits at 16-0 — the best record in all of U Sports.   

Queen’s was in control for most of the contest against Ryerson, up 47-32 after three quarters. A 16-2 run by Ryerson tied the match-up late in the quarter, but Queen’s prevailed. A late layup by fifth-year guard Emily Hazlett was the difference. In the win, Robyn Pearson was a force in the post, scoring 13 points while adding 12 rebounds. 

On the next night, Queen’s cruised to a 71-44 win against Toronto. Defence defined the game for Queen’s as they held their opponents to a mere 23.9 per cent from the field, while shooting 40.6 per cent themselves. Pearson led the Gaels for a second night in a row, scoring 18 points to go with her 10 rebounds.

Next week the Gaels face off against another U Sports top-ten team in Carleton, with their winning streak on the line. 

Men’s volleyball: Gaels win against Trent, dropping one set

In their lone game of the weekend, Queen’s defeated the winless Trent Excalibur 3-1, pushing their season record to 9-5. 

Queen’s was the more efficient team throughout the four sets, out hitting Trent .227 to .130. However, the Gaels gave the Excalibur just their third winning set of the season — RMC gave them their fourth the next day.

Zac Hutcheson continued his strong play this year, notching nine kills and serving six aces in the victory. Hutcheson is now fifth in the OUA with 158 kills, and leads the league with 117 digs. 

Queen’s sits third in the OUA East with four games left in regular season, with their next two at home against York and Nipissing.

Women’s volleyball: Back on track with sweep of Trent

After losing to Toronto and Ryerson last weekend, Queen’s victory against Trent looks to put the team back on track.

Queen’s was in control of most of the game, only allowing 19 points through the first two sets.

The Gaels were led on the day by Caroline Livingston, with her 11 kills and two aces. Queen’s was efficient on the day, only committing 10 errors and finishing with a .313 hitting percentage. 

Men’s hockey: Comeback falls short

A third period comeback wouldn’t be enough for the men’s hockey team after falling behind 2-0 in the first two periods against UOIT. Goals from Patrick Downe and Darcy Greenaway late in the third period forced overtime, but their efforts came up short in the extra period. 

Queen’s was outshot on the night 44-23, and will look to bounce back against Concordia this weekend. 

Women’s hockey: Winning streak ends at eight

After spending all of January undefeated, the women’s hockey team dropped their first two games of the new month.

In London on Friday, Queen’s was outplayed by Western, falling 6-3. Although they went into the second period with a 2-0 lead, Western came back strong. Western scored four straight goals before the Gaels’ Jessica Wakefield answered with a goal to make the game 4-3. 

Western went on to score two more goals until time expired. In the loss, Queen’s only managed to produce 18 shots, compared to the Mustangs’ 31.

In their second game against the Ryerson Rams, Queen’s fared much better. The Gaels and Rams played even hockey through the first two periods, with the game tied 2-2. With the third period and overtime unable to solve anything, the teams moved onto a shootout. During the shootout Ryerson scored twice to win the game.

With their two losses, Queen’s now sits fifth in the OUA. This weekend, the team faces off against Windsor and York.
