What's in winter beauty

In Kingston, you reach a point where glowing, tanned, bronzed skin just looks blatantly out of place.

That point comes right about now. It’s getting colder and that means it’s time to make some changes to your beauty routine.

You’ve probably heard this a hundred times before, but it’s important: as the weather gets drier and cooler, switch your moisturizer to something heavier. There are a bunch of products offered at a variety of price points – products by French skincare brand Avène are a nice skincare treat for this.

Additionally, don’t put off wearing sunscreen during the winter because the sun’s rays remain potent as they reflect off the white snow and ice.

I’m not just saying this because it sounds cool, but due to FDA rules and foot-dragging, American sunscreens do not contain the best sun protecting ingredients and potency as they can. You’re better off buying European sunscreens if you can get a hold of them.

Otherwise, try La Roche-Posay Hydraphase UV lotion SPF 30 to get both your SPF fix and an extra moisturizing punch to keep your skin happy and healthy all day.

The dreary frigid temperatures are extremely tough on exposed hands – pick up a tin of tried and true blue Nivea Crème, which can also be used on dry spots on your face, and even gives hair sheen and texture if you’re looking to get the most bang for your buck. Otherwise, Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream is always a go-to favourite. Top off balmy hands with short, shiny nails in dark red or slate.

Now that you have a moisturized base to work off of, ‘tis the season to test dark and daring winter beauty trends.

For eyes, try a scaled down version of silver liner like Pat McGrath showed at Dior for something other than the standard black.

Copper glitter overtop blue shadow, courtesy of Diane Kendal for Thakoon, makes for a standout look – though stick to using either copper or blue to avoid complication. Or forsake mascara for a microscopic thin dash of colour above the eyelash for a thoroughly modern take (seen at Alexander Wang among others).

If you plan on doing bare eyes, use this as an opportunity to try out a serious lip statement – like a matte red, dark berry or ombre shades (also seen at Dior). Otherwise let your natural beauty shine and try out a stark minimal makeup look.

Nothing looks fresher during the winter than the sleek hair at Chloé or Alexander Wang’s glossy auburn coloured ponytails. Otherwise, there is always a toque to keep warm and cover up any bad hair days.
