The women’s soccer team steamrolled RMC this past weekend with a 10-0 win.

In their first win of the season (1-1-3), the team capitalized in front of goal, scoring on 10 of their 18 shots.

For a team that’s only scored four times in their last four games, Coach Dave McDowell said scoring has been a focus.

“That’s one of the things we have been talking about, being more efficient in terms of taking advantage of quality chances,” McDowell said.

First-year forward Jenny Wolever opened her OUA account on the weekend, netting her first two goals in the first half to put the Gaels out to a 2-0 lead. Her goals were followed with goals by teammates Laura Callender, Tianna Lombardo and Rachel Radu.

Tara Bartram capped off the first half with two goals of her own, resulting in a 7-0 half-time lead.

In a second half where the Gaels dominated possession, the team tallied three more goals, scored by Jessie de Boer, Brittany Almeida and Claudia Glasspoole. Goalkeepers Madison Tyrell and Michaila Frawley combined in goal to preserve the Gaels shutout, with Frawley stopping two attempts in the second half.

This wasn’t the first time the Gaels have won 10-0. In 2004, the Gaels beat RMC by the same score at home. Coach McDowell stressed the importance of last week’s practice in preparing for the match-up versus RMC.

“The best thing, from our perspective, is that the girls took a lot of the stuff from training and brought it forward to the game,” McDowell said. “We are trying to get our wide defenders more involved in attacking. It’s a lot of little things from within our system that we are trying to get them to do.”

When asked about what his team thought about the game, McDowell said the team can’t get too carried away with the 10-0 win.

“Obviously they enjoyed the win,” he said. “More importantly they enjoyed the way they went about business and thoroughly dominated the game.”

“They understand that it is still early in the season, and that everything we do is just another stepping stone.”

The Gaels are in action next against U of T and Ryerson on Sept. 19 and 20, who they drew 1-1 and 0-0 respectively earlier this season.

Looking ahead to the upcoming weekend, McDowell believes that finishing will be the deal-breaker in the Gaels chances of winning.

“We need more finishing like we did here [against RMC],” he said. “We want to have a more complete effort defensively — we got close to that against RMC — buying into the concept that team defending comes down to every player.”
