Yellow House open for move-in

After construction delays postponed move-in, the Yellow House is now open for its new tenants.

Four groups were selected by the University Council on Anti-Racism and Equity (UCARE) sub-committee last March to be housed in the Yellow House, located at 140 Stuart St. The groups are the African and Caribbean Students’ Association, the Levana Gender Advocacy Centre, the Queen’s Black Academic Society, and the Queen’s University Muslim Student Association.

The Levana Gender Advocacy Centre and the Queen’s University Muslim Students’ Association both told The Journal on Monday they were looking forward to moving into the space. The centre had previously said it hoped groups could move in before Orientation week.

“We’re still in the process of moving in,” the Levana Gender Advocacy Centre wrote in a statement.

Zaryab Ahmed, Sci ’20, director of outreach and education for the Queen’s University Muslim Students’ Association, wrote in a statement, “We have not been able to take out the time to complete our move as most of our exec team was away.”

“They have provided us the keys and the space and we are welcome to move in whenever we would like to,” Ahmed said. “We would love to complete our move sometime soon.”

In a statement provided to The Journal, Teri Shearer, deputy provost (Academic Operations and Inclusion), she said she is “pleased to note that four groups have now moved into the Yellow House.”

Shearer added that a welcome dinner was hosted at the Yellow House on Sept. 25, attended by 19 student club members and representatives from the Division of Student Affairs and the Human Rights and Equity Office.

Work at the Yellow House isn’t finished yet, Shearer admits. She plans to recruit a director and administrative support person to staff the house during weekdays.

“We have some minor renovations planned for the space that will begin later this month,” Shearer said.

An official opening event is being planned for the winter term, according to Shearer.
