On May 19, the AMS announced its “Assembly Timetable” on social media. The original post listed the following assembly dates: May 20, Jun. 24, Jul. 22, and Aug. 19.

“Any students are welcome to come to the Assembly,” the posts read.

AMS Assembly is the highest legislative body in the undergraduate student government. Assembly fulfills its mandate by debating reports, recommendations, and motions submitted by the AMS Government Caucus, the Faculty Societies or any individual AMS member.

May Assembly was hosted via Zoom on May 20 and was open to the public. No public AMS Assembly meeting was held in the month of June.

“We recognize that ‘May Assembly’ was a unique event for the AMS, in which we opened the meeting up to the public to ensure that, in navigating remote delivery and student safety and equity discussions, students were given a platform to voice their concerns directly to President’s Caucus,” AMS President Zaid Kasim wrote in an email to The Journal.

Under section 6.1.4 of the AMS Constitution, “President’s Caucus shall have the delegated powers of the Assembly between May 1 and Aug. 31 of each year and other such times when regular classes are not in session at the University.”

Kasim added in his statement that the AMS hosted President’s Caucus on Jun. 24.

“President’s Caucus is privately held and the reports and agendas of all President’s Caucus meetings over the summer months are made available to the public on the AMS website,” Kasim wrote.

“Many elected members from Faculties do not begin their terms until the Fall, and President’s Caucus in the summer reflects reduced member numbers. Substantive motions are not passed until we have all voting members present, to ensure all members are properly informed and compensated.”
