This November, the AMS is holding Charity Month—a series of fundraising events to benefit a Kingston organization.

Tiana Wong, Vice-President (Operations) of the AMS and organizer of this year’s Charity Month, spoke with The Journal about her plans for November.

“I had the members of [AMS] senior management submit different local charities, and then we had a presentation on each of them. We voted so that all of our efforts could go towards supporting one charity,” she said.

The beneficiary chosen by the AMS this year was the Kingston Youth Shelter, an organization that offers counselling, support, and housing to unhoused youth.

“I really wanted to highlight that it’s local Kingston charities we’re trying to support that are very close to our school community,” Wong explained.

“AMS Charity Month is all about doing whatever we can to support the Kingston Youth Shelter […], whether that’s raising awareness, or raising holiday gifts or monetary funds.”

Some of the fundraising events planned for Charity Month include an AMS-wide euchre tournament, donation bins set up outside different AMS services, and a photo booth in the ARC on Nov. 17.

Each AMS service, along with Team RTZ, will be participating in Charity Month. Services have been tasked to come up with their own way to support the Kingston Youth Shelter, whether that’s by raising awareness about the organization or hosting fundraisers of their own.

In addition, Wong said she has speakers from the Kingston Youth Shelter scheduled to give presentations to the AMS on how best to support the organization.

Above all, Wong hopes Charity Month presents an opportunity for Queen’s students to give back to their local community.

“I would really like to raise $500, and then fill some buckets with donations that are not money for the Kingston Youth Shelter—warm clothes, school supplies, holiday gifts, cleaning supplies, toiletries. All those sorts of things are awesome.”
