Best of Kingston 2011-12

About 200 online voters proved opinionated, and often divided in our annual online survey. Here are the 2011-12 results for the best Kingston has to offer.

BEST PLACE TO TAKE YOUR PARENTS TO DINNER

1) Le Chien Noir

2) Chez Piggy

3) Megalos

Let’s hope your parents are paying, because Market Square’s classy restaurant Le Chien Noir Bistro took the top spot.

BEST PIZZA

1) Atomica

2) Bubba’s

3) 241

Best of Kingston voters showed their preference for high-quality pizza joints. Atomica beat out the hub’s Bubba’s and 241.

BEST PLACE TO IMPRESS YOUR DATE

1) Megalos

2) Grecos

3) Tango

If you’re on a student budget, get your wallet ready. The fancy but pricey establishments of Grecos and Tango will make it a date to remember.

BEST BOOKSTORE

1) Indigo

2) Novel Idea

3) Campus Bookstore

No shocker here – Indigo’s large selection likely contributed to its first-place finish.

BEST AMS SERVICES

1) Common Ground and TAPS

2) Walkhome

3) P & CC

Voters deemed TAPS and Common Ground equally great student-run services this year. The winners show where student priorities lie – food.

BEST GROCERY STORE

1) Loblaws

2) John’s Deli

3) Metro

It’s not surprising that grocery giant Loblaws grabbed first place — considering its size, students should have no problem finding what they need.

BEST STEAK

1) The Keg

2) Le Chien Noir

3) Grizzly Grill

Once again, the Keg took first place for its specialty.

BEST SUSHI

1) Sima

2) Niji

3) Arisu and Sushi Ya!

Sushi is a popular student food, and Sima once again proved the most popular venue for satisfying that ever-present sushi craving.

BEST COFFEE

1) Starbucks

2) Common Ground

3) Tim Horton’s

Voters again showed their affinity for fanciness – Starbucks beat out student-run Common Ground and the simple pleasures offered by Tim Hortons.

BEST BAR

1) Queen’s Pub

2) The Brass

3) The Mansion

Queen’s Pub was miles ahead of the Brass and the Mansion in votes, demonstrating that students would rather frequent the on-campus haunt than venture out into the hub.

BEST POUTINE

1) Smoke’s Poutinerie

2) Bubba’s

3) The Pita Grill

Given the range of creative options, including guacamole and jalapeno peppers on poutine,Smoke’s serves as the best establishment to accommodate all caloric cravings.

BEST LIVE MUSIC VENUE

1) The Mansion

2) The Grad Club

3) Clark Hall Pub

If you haven’t heard live music at the Mansion, you better get yourself there pronto — according to voters, live music there beats closer-to-campus locations.

BEST BRUNCH LOCATION

1) Windmills

2) Wolfe Island Bakery

3) Morrison’s

Honourable mention goes to Wolfe Island Bakery — the small establishment located on Queen Street, not Wolfe Island.

BEST PLACE TO ACCOMMODATE DIET RESTRICTIONS

1) Tara Natural Foods

2) Loblaws

3) Metro

If you’re a gluten-free eater, keep Kosher or have other dietary restrictions, Tara’s — located at 81 Princess St.— is the place for you.

BEST PLACE FOR CLASS

1) Goodes Hall

2) Biosci Complex

3) ILC

If you must venture out to class, Goodes Hall on Alfred and Union Streets, frequented by Commerce students, is the ideal location.

BEST CLOTHING STORE

1) Urban Outfitters

2) Gap and Lululemon

3) American Apparel

According to voters, wearing Urban Outfitters is the key to looking sharp.

BEST PLACE TO STUDY

1) Stauffer Library

2) Douglas Library

3) Common Ground

Whether it’s in the midst of midterms, exams or final essay crunch-time, Stauffer’s the clear choice to study productively.

BEST PLACE TO PEOPLE-WATCH

1) Queen’s Centre

2) Stauffer Library

3) Common Ground

People in the Queen’s Centre may not be there to grab food or go to the gym – they could be watching you. But someone also submitted “everywhere,” so technically this could be a concern wherever you go.

BEST DANCE FLOOR

1) Alfie’s

2) The Ale House

3) Stages

No need to venture out into the hub for a night out — voters deemed Alfie’s the best place to show off those dance skills.

BEST POST-EXAM ACTIVITY

1) Drinking

2) Sleep

3) QP

Post-exam drinks no doubt combine celebration with an attempt to erase painful study memories. An honourable mention goes to submission for Lord of the Rings marathons.

1) Copper Penny, Skating rink outside City Hall, Queen’s Pub

2) Waterfront

3) Mango

Lucky for students, there are plenty of activities and food options for dates that won’t break the bank.
