The women’s soccer team continued their undefeated season, earning two wins this weekend by beating the Nipissing Lakers 2-1 on Saturday and the Laurentian Voyageurs 4-0 on Sunday.

Saturday’s game started with back-and-forth possession of the ball, with the Gaels able to consistently get shots on the Lakers’ net. However, the Lakers’ goalie Mykaela Volpe was equal to the task.

The Lakers struck first with a Madison Logan strike at 28 minutes. The Lakers would go on to hit the post and the crossbar later in the game, but this goal would turn out to be the Lakers’ only official shot on goal.

Alexandra Doane evened things up for the Gaels just eight minutes later, and then Christie Gray scored the winner at 61 minutes.

“[Nipissing] established a style of play that was very difficult to deal with. They were ultra-physical, and that made it a very small field,” Head Coach Dave McDowell told The Journal in an interview. “Having said that, we still found a way to win and scored a super goal to win it.”

“I don’t think there was a second where anybody thought, ‘We’re not going to win this game.’”

On Sunday, the Gaels took on the Laurentian Voyageurs, who were sitting sixth in the OUA standings. Queen’s took control from the first whistle, and scored two goals in the first half.

The first goal, which proved to be the game-winner owing to Alanna Richardson’s shutout, was scored by Christie Gray. It was her second game-winner of the weekend, and gave her four on the season, which leads the OUA.

“Scoring first goal is always a good thing. It takes a little bit of the pressure off, especially playing into what was a fairly heavy win,” McDowell said.

Taylor Green also tallied in the first half, and then Gray knocked in another one in the second frame. Jenna Matsukubo added one more insurance goal to close out the game.

The teamwork on the field Sunday contributed to the win, with standout assists by Jamie Foot and Matsukubo making a big difference.

“We took advantage of wide areas and our finishing was efficient enough,” McDowell said.

After their successful weekend, the Gaels play two away games, against the Trent Excalibur on Saturday, Oct. 5, and the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Sunday, Oct. 6.
