On-campus study spaces close to comply with lockdown measures

Queen’s is adjusting its operations after the provincial government announced a province-wide shut down Thursday.

The grey zone lockdown will take effect Saturday and last four weeks. During this period, individuals are required to restrict indoor gatherings to their immediate household and outdoor social gatherings to a five-person maximum. Travel outside one’s region should be restricted to essential purposes.

“The University has been operating with a heightened level of restrictions for some time, so many of the required changes to on-campus operations are already in place,” Mark Green, provost and vice principal (academic), wrote in an email to students Thursday evening.

“Students with on-campus academic activities will receive further updates from their program or faculty office as needed next week,” Green wrote.

A limited number of classes that require in-person teaching are permitted, including clinical training that supports health related programs. The total number of students in the instructional space cannot exceed 50 and must comply with the appropriate safety measures.

Non-health related programs that cannot be modified for virtual delivery must reduce their instructional spaces to a maximum of 10 students.

Researchers require approval for on-site activity; however, those who can work remotely should only come to campus when necessary. Only employees with essential on-campus positions, or those who must be on campus to do their work, should be on campus.

All on-campus study spaces have also been closed; the library remains open for curbside pickup only. Remote exams will continue as scheduled.

In a follow-up email sent to students living in residence, Residence Life confirmed that residences will remain open with some modifications.

Dining halls, Location 21, and The Lazy Scholar are limited to take-out only. Students are encouraged to use mobile ordering for the dining halls.

Residence floor lounges and common rooms will be closed.

“It is essential that you continue to be diligent in adhering to all public health and residence restrictions,” Residence Life wrote. “Limit your contacts to only those in your household—indoor and outdoor gatherings continue to be restricted to a maximum of five people; mask-wearing, hand hygiene and physical distancing are still critical.”
