Sports in Brief: Week 3

Varsity Sports

Football

The Men’s football team notched their second victory of the season over the weekend, routing the uOttawa Gee-Gees 30-17 on Sept 25. Now 2-0, they currently sit atop the OUA East rankings, matched only by Waterloo (2-0), who is ranked first in the OUA’s West division. This weekend, the Gaels will travel to Toronto to face the University of Toronto (UofT) Varsity Blues on Saturday.

Rugby

The Women’s Rugby team put in a standout performance over the weekend, shredding the Brock Badgers 50-0 to open the season on the road. Now 1-0, they’ll look to extend their winning streak this weekend when they play the York Lions at Queen’s on Oct. 2.

The Men’s Rugby team also made a powerful statement in their regular-season opener, annihilating the UofT Varsity Blues 74-0. Evidently carrying some serious momentum, they will host their home-opener this weekend, squaring up against the Trent Excalibur on Oct. 2.

Soccer

The Men’s Soccer team had a tough start to their regular season, losing both of their two outings against Carleton over the weekend. Looking to improve their 0-2 record, they’ll face the Trent Excalibur in another doubleheader later this week, starting on Oct. 1 at Richardson Stadium and then heading to Peterborough two days later, on Oct. 3.

Mirroring the men’s squad, the Women’s Soccer Team had a solid start to their regular season campaign. Also facing Carleton in a doubleheader, they took victories in both games against the Ravens, and boast an undefeated regular season record ahead of their next outing, a match against Trent on Oct. 1.

Cross-Country

Last week, the Queen’s Cross-Country team had an admirable start to their season, with the Men’s and Women’s squads finishing fourth and fifth respectively at the Vigars & Salter Western International Cross-Country Invitational in London on Sept. 25. The team’s next showcase will occur later this week in Ottawa at the Capital XC Challenge on Oct. 2.

Varsity Clubs

Lacrosse

The Men’s Lacrosse Team evened up their record over the weekend with a 14-6 win over the uOttawa Gee-Gees. Now 1-1 for the season, they’ll look to hold their momentum this week as they return to Ottawa to face Carleton on Oct. 2.

The Women’s Lacrosse team also found success in their slate of games last week, sweeping the Trent Excalibur in both games of their on-the-road doubleheader. Sitting at 3-0 in this year’s regular season campaign, they’ll go for another two rounds against Trent next week, with both games taking place here at Queen’s on Oct. 9.

Fastpitch

In their quadruple-header weekend, the Queen’s Fastpitch team took no prisoners, snatching two victories apiece from the Carleton Ravens and the X University Rams.  Now at 6-2 for the regular season, they’re heading into another full weekend when they’ll face uOttawa twice on Oct. 2. and York once on Oct. 3.

Baseball

The Queen’s Baseball team had disappointing series this past weekend, dropping every one of their four games against the UofT Varsity Blues. They look to salvage their 6-2 record in the final four-game series of their regular season, set to take place against uOttawa this weekend ahead of the OUA Regional Qualifiers on Oct. 9 and 10.

Field Hockey

The Queen’s Field Hockey team opened their regular season with back-to-back losses against the York Lions on Sept. 26. On the back foot, they’ll be focusing on snagging some wins this weekend as they face the UofT Varsity Blues at Tindall on Oct. 2.
