Sports in Brief: Week 4

Varsity Sports

Football

The Men’s Football team recorded another win over the weekend, bringing their season record to a stellar 3-0. With Saturday’s victory over the University of Toronto (UofT), the Gaels are now the only team in the entire OUA to have not lost a game this season, catapulting them to the top of the provincial rankings. This week, they will face off against the Guelph Gryphons (1-1) at Richardson Stadium on Oct. 8, with kickoff starting at 6 p.m.

Rugby

The Men’s Rugby team extended their three-year-long stretch of regular season wins on Saturday with a commanding 71-7 victory against Trent. Now tied with Guelph as the foremost ranked men’s rugby team in the province, the Gaels will hope to keep their form as they travel to the other side of the city this weekend for a matchup against the RMC Paladins on Oct. 9.

The Women’s Rugby team also brought home a win in their season home-opener on Saturday, handily defeating the York University Lions 65-14. Also tied with the University of Guelph (2-0) for the top OUA ranking, this weekend will see only one team emerge with a clean record, as the Gaels and Gryphons will be settling their score on the pitch in Guelph on Oct. 9.

Soccer

The Men’s soccer team snagged their first two victories of the season over the weekend, sweeping their double-header against the Trent Excalibur. Now boasting a 2-2 record, they’ll look to continue their winning streak as they match up against Ontario Tech University twice this weekend, on Oct. 7. and Oct. 9.

The Women’s Soccer team also saw great success against Trent over the weekend, shutting out the Excalibur 5-0 on Friday evening. Now undefeated throughout their first three games, they’ll also take their talents to Oshawa for 2 games against Ontario Tech this weekend, matching the dates for the Men’s games.

Cross Country

The Gaels Cross Country squad shook off whatever hiccups they might have had in their first invitational, as the men’s team filled out the first four top spots—with the women’s team having 1st and 5th place finishers as well in their division—in the Capital XC Challenge in Ottawa over the weekend. Notching 1st and 2nd place overall for team points, men’s and women’s respectively, the next meet for the team will be on Oct. 22 at the Bayfront Open in Hamilton.

Varsity Clubs

Lacrosse

The Men’s Lacrosse team notched themselves another win over the weekend—routing the Carleton Ravens 9-6—which brings their season record to a positive 2-1. This week, they’ll face the uOttawa Gee-Gees in Kingston on Oct. 7.

Fastpitch

Due to Saturday’s inclement weather, the Fastpitch Team’s doubleheader against the uOttawa Gee-Gees on Oct. 2 was cancelled. However, they did play their match against York University the following day and took home a win, ultimately bringing their record to a stellar 7-2 for the season. Their next outings will be this weekend, when they’ll face the X University Rams on Oct. 8 and the UofT Varsity Blues on Oct. 9.

Baseball

The Gaels Baseball team (3-6) also dealt with weather-related issues over the weekend, only being able to play one of their four games against the uOttawa Gee-Gees. Taking a victory 5-4 in what was technically their last game of the regular season, the team’s next outing will be at the OUA regional qualifiers, which will begin Oct. 9 and conclude the following day.

Field Hockey

The Queen’s Field Hockey team had a less-than-ideal weekend, dropping both of their two games against the UofT Varsity Blues, 0-8 and 2-3 respectively. Despite starting the season 0-4, they’ll have the chance to hit the Varsity Blues back in their next two games, taking place in Toronto on Oct. 16.
