Sports in Brief: Week nine

Varsity Teams

Football

The Queen’s Men’s Football Team defeated the uOttawa Gee-Gees in the OUA semi-final last weekend 32-15. In doing so, they advance to the Yates Cup—Ontario’s provincial title match—against Western this weekend. Kick-off will be at 1 p.m. at Richardson Stadium on Nov. 20.

Rugby

The Women’s Rugby Team finished their season with a win over uOttawa in the U Sports Championship Finals, earning them their first national title in program history. They finish the season with an 8-1 overall record.

Basketball

The Men’s Basketball team won their contest against the University of Toronto (UofT) Varsity Blues on Nov. 13, bringing their season opening win streak to 3-0. They face the Laurentian Voyageurs in a doubleheader at home this weekend—the likes of which will be their final games before competitive play pauses for the holidays and resumes in January.

The Women’s basketball team also had a successful trip to Toronto last weekend, dribbling the Varsity blues 98-62 and drawing their overall season record to an even 1-1. They will similarly face the Voyageurs in a Kingston-based doubleheader this weekend, beginning on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the ARC’s main gym.

Volleyball

The Women’s Volleyball team suffered their first loss of the season last Saturday after facing the UofT Varsity Blues. They’ll hopefully bounce back in a one-off contest against RMC taking place Nov. 26.

The Men’s Volleyball squad extended their winning streak to start off the season in their outing against the Varsity Blues over the weekend, bringing their overall record to 3-0. Matching the women’s schedule, they will also square off against the RMC Paladins across the causeway next weekend.

Hockey

After their extended stay in North Bay—playing two games against the Nipissing Lakers on Friday and Saturday—the Men’s Hockey Team returned to Kingston without a single scratch on their current seasonal record (4-0). Sticking around Kingston for two matchups this weekend—one game against Ontario Tech and RMC apiece—the Gaels will hopefully extend their win streak even more as regular season play continues to get underway.

After starting the season 0-3, the Women’s hockey team was finally able to grab a win in their second game against the UofT Varsity Blues on Saturday. They will look to even up their record even further as they hit the ice against Ontario Tech in a doubleheader this weekend.

Varsity Clubs

Water Polo

The Men’s Water Polo team had a disappointing end to their regular season after dropping their fourth and final match against uOttawa on Saturday. They head into OUA Regional qualifiers next week with their opponent still to be determined.

The Women’s Water Polo team had a similarly tough end to their regular season over the weekend, losing their match against the Gee-Gees 9-13. They also head into regional qualifiers next week with an 0-4 record.
