Women’s Soccer starts season strong

The Women’s Soccer team’s weekend couldn’t have been better. They won their home opener, 2-1 against the Ryerson Rams on Aug. 31, before edging out the University of Toronto Blues 1-0 on Sunday.

The match against Ryerson was a back-and-forth affair with even possession of the ball. Jamie Foot broke the stalemate at 27 minutes, giving the Gaels a short-lived 1-0 lead.

Under two minutes later, Alex Rodkin scored an unassisted goal for the Rams to tie the match at one.

In the second half, Jamie Foot set up Jenna Matsukubo, who scored the deciding second goal and secured a home win for Queen’s. It was Matsukubo’s first U Sports goal, and it came in her first-ever game with the Gaels.

The next day, the women completed the opening weekend sweep with a tight 1-0 victory over the U of
T Blues. The first half was scoreless, but Queen’s outshot the Blues four to one.

In the second half, Queen’s goalkeeper, Anna Stephenson, kept the Gaels alive with back-to-back saves, leaving the game at 0-0.

It was looking like things were going to end 0-0, until Jenny Matsukubo came through again, setting up a Christie Gray finish at 75 minutes that won Queen’s the game.

The Rams and Blues get another crack at Queen’s this weekend, as the Gaels travel to Toronto for a pair of grudge matches.
